Apartment Design.

Located in the historic core of Żurrieq, this project involved the extensive renovation and modernization of a traditional Maltese House of Character. The primary challenge was to respect and retain the original limestone features while transforming the residence into a highly functional, contemporary home suited for a modern lifestyle.

The Process

Our intervention focused on spatial optimization and technical integration. Houses of character often suffer from fragmented layouts and poor natural light; so we redesigned the internal flow to create open, airy living spaces that connect seamlessly with the central courtyard.

A major technical hurdle in these thick-walled stone structures is the routing of modern utilities. We developed a bespoke Electrical and Lighting Plan that avoided invasive channeling into historic masonry. By utilizing strategic lighting—including recessed floor uplighters to accentuate the texture of the limestone and integrated task lighting—we enhanced the home’s traditional aesthetic while providing the versatility required for modern domestic use.
